Leimec manufactures the striking and user-friendly transport boxes for T-DRILL's new portable machines – "True professionalism"
When the world-leading provider of tube processing solutions, T-DRILL, designed a new series of portable collaring machines, one thing was clear to Mechanical Engineer Jukka-Pekka Paukkunen: T-DRILL had to be able to offer customers transport boxes that were both functional, durable, and stylish. The manufacturing of the boxes was entrusted to Leimec.
"We wanted the boxes to be manufactured by a supplier whose quality and delivery reliability we could trust. Leimec quickly stood out. We produced just a simple prototype of the box and presented it to Leimec with the idea that they would continue to develop the product. As soon as Leimec started working on the project, we realized that they were very knowledgeable. There was true professionalism behind it", Paukkunen explains.
Desired outcome achieved through active product development
At Leimec, the development of the box was led by Product Manager Aleksi Hyyriö and Lead Mechanical Engineer Amir Dirbaz. The design work began with defining the requirements. Because the box needed to withstand handling and transportation, its components needed to be of top quality. Additionally, the box had to be designed so that its production would be cost-effective for the customer. A third important criterion was user-friendliness, which was implemented, for example, in the designing of a rotating feature in the box's handle. Since T-DRILL has invested in the appearance of the new portable machines, the box also needed to be visually appealing.
"We manufactured about three prototypes of the box, testing the fit and functionality of different purchased components and how the manufacturing process fits into our production line. For example, designing the rotating handle turned out to be a complex task where tolerances were extremely tight. With the prototypes, we found the right manufacturing methods", Hyyriö says.
Leimec advanced the development of the product with regular suggestions and active communication. According to Hyyriö, product development has recently played an even larger role in Leimec's other projects as well.
"It is great that we get to apply our expertise and professionalism in various projects."
"A smart-looking, functional end result"
The collaboration between Leimec and T-DRILL, both part of the Leinolat Group, was smooth. The companies in the group regularly collaborate on both internal projects and customer projects. The companies' service offerings and expertise complement each other, resulting in each aspect of the projects being executed with special expertise and seamless teamwork.
"We are very satisfied with the end result and the seamlessness of the entire project. Leimec has a competent, professional team, with whom it is enjoyable to work with. When I think back to that first prototype we presented to Leimec, I can only say that the end result turned out exceptionally smart-looking and functional", Paukkunen says.
"I am particularly pleased with how enthusiastically the project was received in our production. Everyone perceived it as a pleasant, interesting new challenge. From that basis, it was easy to continue product development. We look forward to the product being used by customers and to continuing developing it even further", Hyyriö concludes.
