Mechanical designer Amir Dirbaz has been designing products for Leimec since 2018. When the design agency through which Dirbaz initially worked at Leimec ceased operations, the company did not want to lose someone who had built up such extensive expertise. Today, Dirbaz plays a key role in the company’s development work and gets to pursue his passion: refining ideas into finished products.
“From the very beginning, Leimec gave me the opportunity to demonstrate my skills. Previously, Leimec didn’t have an in-house design function, but as the number of products grew following my arrival, the company recognized a need for it. That turned out to be the right decision. I get to do my dream job here,” says Dirbaz.
Ideas are examined from every angle, even under tight deadlines
Dirbaz, who originally qualified as an IT support specialist and a Bachelor of Business Administration (specializing in information processing), developed an interest in mechanical engineering while working in production roles; he completed his mechanical engineering degree alongside his job. As a mechanical designer at Leimec, Dirbaz is responsible for product design and development.
”Design work always begins with the customer’s needs. The design process takes into account factors such as the cost-efficiency of manufacturing methods and aims to utilize existing solutions. Usually, some degree of customization is also required. Examining ideas from different perspectives and applying logical thinking are the highlights of the job for me. Every power plant is unique, so every workday is different, too.”
Dirbaz’s strength as a designer lies in his ability to quickly turn an idea into a sketch for presentation to the customer. One of his most memorable projects was a power plant in Dublin, for which he designed and drafted the ventilation system in just one month. Customized products and speed are competitive advantages for Leimec and provide an interesting challenge for the design work. The company also focuses on ensuring that its products are easy and effortless to commission. “In the design phase, you need time to consider your implementation idea from every angle. You might discover that your initial thought isn’t actually the best solution. When we examine the big picture from all perspectives through an open dialogue with the client, the result is a truly optimal solution—a product that effectively serves its purpose.”
Welcomed with open arms at Leimec
According to Dirbaz, cooperation and communication within Leimec work exceptionally well. Collaboration with both production and management is seamless, and everyone has the opportunity to take ownership of their work. Dirbaz feels trusted; he is free to plan his own schedule and tasks in the way he sees fit. “It isn’t always easy for someone with foreign roots to find a job. I came to Finland at the age of eight and have encountered prejudice in the workplace, too. At Leimec, however, I was welcomed with open arms, and my professional competence has never been questioned. From the very beginning, I was given a free hand and the space to grow into the designer I am today.”
