Carbon Footprint Calculation for Every Delivery and a New Factory Layout – Uwira Invests in Sustainability in 2025

Over the past three years, Uwira has systematically worked to improve the sustainability and responsibility of its operations. In practice, this means evaluating and developing processes across all business areas, including production, administration, and personnel. The first development areas will be addressed during 2025.

New Factory Layout and a Carbon Footprint Calculation for Every Product

One of Uwira's top priorities is to reach a stage where a carbon footprint calculation is provided for every delivery right at the quotation stage. The necessary data will be integrated into Uwira's ERP system during 2025.

Additionally, Uwira will initiate a large-scale factory layout renewal. The new layout will enhance environmental impact through improved operational efficiency, optimized material flow, and new LED lighting. It will also benefit employees by increasing workplace safety and well-being.

"With carbon footprint calculations and the new factory layout, we aim to increase transparency in our products and deliveries, to strengthen our competitiveness as a partner and to continue a safe place to work for our employees", says Managing Director Arto Aro.

Uwira's Workforce Represents 16 Nationalities

For years, Uwira has hired employees through international recruiting. Today, the company's staff includes individuals from 16 different nationalities. This diversity has highlighted the need for clearer and more comprehensive internal communication that takes into account, for example, different language backgrounds. In response, Uwira is making key documents available in English and expanding onboarding programs to include not just technical training but also insights into Finnish workplace culture. The goal is to help international employees integrate even more effectively.

"We want to be a safe, balanced, and fair workplace for all our employees. People will remain a major focus in our sustainability efforts."

First EcoVadis Sustainability Rating Achieved in 2023

While Uwira has recently taken a more systematic approach to sustainability, steps in this direction have been underway for a long time. Key milestones include achieving an EcoVadis sustainability rating in 2023. EcoVadis evaluates companies based on environmental responsibility, ethics, sustainable procurement, as well as employee rights and human rights. Uwira currently holds a Bronze rating, placing it among the top 35 % of companies assessed.

Additionally, Uwira has long been committed to good governance by ensuring compliance with defined guidelines and policies. The company adheres to Leinolat Group's code of conduct and procurement policy and implements specific procedures related to corruption prevention, ethical trade, and tax compliance. Finnish law comprehensively defines principles related to governance, making Uwira's operations inherently transparent and ethical.

Sustainability is also reflected in Uwira's products. As a manufacturer of double-walled piping for alternative fuels, Uwira plays a role in the maritime industry's transition toward more environmentally friendly fuels.

Ongoing Evaluation and Development

Sustainability in business is an ongoing task; it requires continuous evaluation and development. Uwira will continue to align with Leinolat Group's sustainability strategy, participate actively in ESG reporting, and stay updated on legislation, regulations, and stakeholder expectations. Aro emphasizes that sustainability is a broad topic that impacts all areas of business operations and involves the entire workforce. To embed sustainability in everyday operations, Uwira will focus on regular information sharing and discussions.

"We will continue to study and reduce our environmental impact, improve the well-being and safety of our diverse workforce, and maintain good governance. By doing so, we can be a more competitive partner for our customers, a better employer for our staff, and contribute to leaving a better world for future generations."

Throughout the year, Uwira will share more updates on sustainability initiatives, including the factory layout changes and the onboarding of new international employees. Stay tuned!
